Hello everyone from all of us at team Vexed! We were fortunate enough to come out on top at the recent ESL NA November Finals, so whoever asked us to do this play by play strategical analysis must somehow think we are qualified enough to do so! In that case, you are all in for a big surprise! Let us take you inside the minds of team Vexed in this week’s episode of… “Oh Geez I Can’t Believe We Made It This Far After ArcticMonkey Almost Made Us Lose Round 1“. Anyway, hope you all enjoy! (P.S. follow along Poky’s Lockwood play-by-play for a less serious but more fun time!)

Picks and Bans

Since our team has a big freelancer pool, we can usually play many compositions and not be too worried about having to play freelancers out of our comfort zone. Nevertheless, there are definitely some priorities that we generally adhere to.

We have the first ban and first pick here so we ban Helio because he is a freelancer that can force catalysts early with his blackhole + wall combo and can easily change the tide of the game. This also enables us to first-pick other strong freelancers like Lockwood and Asana among others.

360 no Scope banned Celeste away from Poky because they know he is good with her but they left Lockwood free to pick and we didn’t think twice, first picking him. The enemy team picked Asana and Zuki here, and we were expecting these picks since Asana is one of the strongest freelancers in the game and they are comfortable playing Zuki.

Our next pick is Grey. Her drone is a good source of energy and very useful in any map since sending the drone and being able to find where the enemy team is in turn 2 creates an advantage. And let’s not forget about her ultimate, which makes it easier to chase enemies and zone them out.

Their next pick was Aurora, another comfort pick for them. Now we have double pick here and we need a support and a frontliner, Asana was already picked so we just take the next strongest frontliner: Rask. Darkcrowpnoi enjoys Su-Ren (maybe too much), so we picked Su-Ren to make him the happiest player ever. 360 no Scope last pick was Blackburn, a solid freelancer in EvoS map and also another comfort pick for them.

TURN BY TURN__________________________________________________________________________
Turn 1
Grey:

  • I go into a good position to send out my scouting drone next turn.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I go to a position where I can’t be spotted but can still apply spirit bend to Poky in case he has a good AOE next turn.
  • Rask:

  • I go as far as possible so next turn I can double move.
  • Lockwood:

  • I roll a pair of dice I keep on my table to decide my opening move (gotta keep from being too predictable right?). I roll a 7 so I position for a somewhat safe opening with a trap throw on the left. If I rolled an 8 I would’ve done a bounce shot instead. I then ponder why Kotto is standing right next to me.
  • Turn 2__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • I send my drone to get vision and know where the enemy is.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I apply spirit bend to Lockwood and move into a stealth bush where I can dash heal Kotto if needed.
  • Rask:

  • I double move again just trying to scout out the enemies.
  • Lockwood:

  • We’ve seen this particular team do some crazy blitz rush strats so I get really scared here and run away like a chicken. With a panicky screech I suggest everyone else does the same.
  • Turn 3__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • I double move to a safe position close to my support because we still didn’t know where the enemy team was exactly.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I knew Arctic was going to double move closer to us and we still didn’t have vision of the enemy so I opt not to break the stealth bush and stayed in place.
  • Rask:

  • I double move again trying to find them.
  • Lockwood:

  • Silence. We enable maphack and see that they’re actually on the other side of the map. This fills me with false bravado as I charge forth blindly towards unchartered territories.
  • Turn 4__________________________________________________________________________

  • More silence. Still nobody to shoot and all of us rotated into cover to try to find someone. A lot of running these first few turns, Su-Ren enjoys the workout. The tension in the air is palpable!
  • Turn 5__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • I send my drone again to try to get vision of enemy team and we finally find Asana so now we have an idea where their team is.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I reposition into another stealth bush. We were hoping one of the enemy lancers lagged behind so we can apply some damage. I also yell at Kotto for taking the energize buff giving away our position.
  • Rask:

  • Since I messed up last turn taking the energize, I now want to secure the HP buff.
  • Lockwood:

  • Here I take a moment to ponder why Kotto stopped right on the energize, giving away our position.
  • Turn 6__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • I secure the HP power-up and get in cover position to hit someone next turn.
  • Su-Ren:

  • We had a better idea where the enemy team was so I positioned myself where I could spirit bend either Poky or Kotto to apply the might and haste.
  • Rask:

  • Now I have a 2 turn healing in my pocket so I need to move deep and find the enemy!
  • Lockwood:

  • We positioned to contest the hp buff, but nobody is there. We notice more sparks in the distance, and grasp at them with our movements like a flock of cats chasing a laser pointer.
  • Turn 7__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • We have vision on Aurora so I hit Aurora with dart and basic shot getting a good amount of energy. Because Kotto is going to knock Aurora back into my drone, I go to a good spot to deal damage to her while in cover.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I give the spirit bend to Kotto since he lied and said he was going to dash into Blackburn and Zuki, applying slow and weaken the following turn. I moved into the middle since I can dash in to deal damage the following turn.
  • Rask:

  • Since I found 3 of them, dashing is not the best idea. They might predict my movement so I changed my decision and knocked back Aurora under Arctic’s drone.
  • Lockwood:

  • Finally somebody to shoot! After throwing out my measly cover damage onto Aurora I then mess up disastrously like the bronze tier player I am and put my move in too late, ending on the same spot as Darkcrow which ends up being a pretty awful mistake since I end up 1 space too far to shoot Aurora next turn, who is the ideal target. Also, Asana could potentially double root me and Dark here if we both stay, which would really suck.
  • Turn 8__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • I shoot Aurora for 34 damage and my drone deals 16 because she was already tracked.
  • Su-Ren:

  • Poky and I were in a prime position to be rooted and damaged by Aurora, so I opt to dash to apply damage and get into another position where I can dash and heal if needed on the following turn.
  • Rask:

  • I can’t hit anyone with my basic attack so I use my dash to slow them.
  • Lockwood:

  • Since I can’t shoot Aurora I just trap Asana instead since I’m a noob. She ends up dashing at me instead of rooting us.
  • Turn 9__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • The enemy team was clustered so I am able to hit 3 enemies with my drone gaining enough energy to get my ultimate.
  • Su-Ren:

  • Poky and I are in a position to get hit by the whole enemy team as so I opt to dash heal Poky and threw out the aoe heal for good measure.
  • Rask:

  • I just go for energy at this point trying to hit both firepowers with my basic attack and following zuki since she is gonna be revealed from Poky’s light em up. (Poky’s edit: nope.. sorry Kotto… I don’t actually run that mod -_-)
  • Lockwood:

  • What’s important to note here is that I quickly recognize the possibility that their whole team turns around and wrecks my face and I start to poop myself silly and mash the dash button. But then out of nowhere a flash of unbridled machismo comes upon me and I realize that if I stand my ground and man up I have a pretty decent light’em’up. So I pop turtle-tech, get Darkcrowpnoi to dash-heal me, pucker up and hope it’s worth. My Nostradamus prediction was accurate and I indeed get blasted and take a truckload of damage but a lot of it gets mitigated/healed and I don’t end up embarrassing myself, thankfully.
  • Turn 10__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • I use my ultimate on Blackburn because he was low and he ended up being in a bad position because he went through it.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I double move into a position where I can possibly do damage to their Blackburn the following turn. Yay, more running!
  • Rask:

  • I knew Zuki was going to jump but still I aoe just in case, you never know man! Since another heal power up is gonna spawn in the next 2 turns I start heading over there!
  • Lockwood:

  • Asana is in the wide open and most of us can hit her so I assume she’ll retribution, so I don’t shoot her to avoid the retribution damage as I learned in my Dealing With Asana 101 course. I shoot Zuki instead as there’s a small chance she doesn’t leave.
  • Turn 11__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • I wasn’t in a good position to deal decent damage to anyone so I just did a cover shot on Asana to guarantee some energy.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I knew Blackburn had his Blitz ability so I opted for an AOE attack. I wanted Poky to predict the Blitz but he said he wanted guaranteed damage. Yep, Blackburn rolled to the spot we thought he was gonna roll to and survived another turn, thanks Poky!
  • Rask:

  • I use all my abilities for ultimate cooldown and we have an idea where zuki might be so I just secure the bush with my basic and try to steal the HP.
  • Lockwood:

  • I have the opportunity here to be a godly player and predict Blackburn’s roll and kill him since there aren’t too many options for him to go, but I opt to be a garbage player instead and go for the guaranteed damage by just shooting Asana. My decision definitely doesn’t pay off, as Blackburn goes exactly where we thought he’d go and ends up surviving a few more turns to get his spooky ultimate.
  • Turn 12__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • Even though I was in cover last turn I ended up taking 57 damage because Zuki’s “Big One” and splash damage shot with Might so I just use “Second Wind” this turn and I go towards an HP power-up.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I couldn’t help finish off the Blackburn because Su-Ren’s stick is too short, so I Spirit Bend him so his shots are weakened this turn. I didn’t expect Blackburn to survive this turn.
  • Rask:

  • At this point it is all about making them use their catalyst to get out.
  • Lockwood:

  • I try to kill Blackburn now that he’s out of escapes, using light’em’up in case Asana dashes onto me and tries to bodyblock my primary shot. He shoots me in the face, lives, and makes me regret not killing him the turn before.
  • Turn 13__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • Aurora used ultimate last turn and I got slowed so I ended up in a really bad spot out of cover. I see Zuki with ultimate and Might so I weaken her with my dart and use Turtle Tech to avoid her damage. Aurora was really low and she was probably going to use Shift so I send my drone to hit Zuki and to cover potential spots where Aurora could go to and fortunately I found where she shifted. After Blast Phase I continue to move towards the HP power-up.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I knew I was going to eat quite a bit of damage so I used the ult on myself.
  • Rask:

  • Aurora uses her cata so I just try to get closer to her.
  • Lockwood:

  • Finally I can kill Blackburn, but I fear he will drop his fatty ult on me before he goes. Darkcrow opts to ult himself instead of me, because of threat of Zuki’s ult hitting him and not me, and the fact that I still have 3 dashes available and won’t die this turn. Blackburn ends up grenading instead of ulting for some reason, I guess because he thought I might dash or wanted to get around the Su-Ren ult this turn, but it still doesn’t make much sense to me since he was dying for sure.
  • Turn 14__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • Finally I got the HP power-up and I go to cover while my drone hits Aurora again.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I knew Zuki was going to cata dash here but didn’t know if she was going to go closer or farther from Lockwood so I opt to dash into a spot where I could do damage to both sides of the wall.
  • Rask:

  • I know where aurora is but she still has a big heal so I decide to dash into her just to slow her, knowing that she is going to knock me back.
  • Lockwood:

  • Not really any good choices for me to shoot here. I assume Zuki will dash but since I can’t hit any of the bushes where she could go there’s just no opportunity for me to pretend to be a good player, so I might as well try to bounce a shot onto her current position for some energy anyway since I don’t want to shoot Asana’s probable retribution. Zuki does indeed cata out but Asana ults in to damage Darkcrow for some reason, so my shot ends up hitting her instead.
  • Turn 15__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • Blackburn is spawning next to me so I double move to the opposite side while getting the Haste power-up.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I yell at Poky for not being in a position where I can dash heal him, what a waste of 12 energy. Good thing Asana was there to hit with the stick.
  • Rask:

  • Aurora is out of the fight. I just kill her and pick another target to chase.
  • Lockwood:

  • Only Asana to shoot here, and no reason to advance recklessly since we are ahead, I hide in a bush pretty much just for fun, even though there’s not really any good reason to do so.
  • Turn 16__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • I see a last known position on Blackburn so I try my luck and use my basic shot but unfortunately he was out of range. I planned to dash to my drone next turn so I move aggressively to give vision for my team.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I didn’t expect Asana to be behind the wall so I use Second Wind and sprint towards Arctic who needed some loving with 2 firepowers spawning near him…. yes, more running.
  • Rask:

  • I dont know why Asana is there so I make a call and see if we can kill her. Poky lied to me and said yes! So I cata close to her to use my ultimate and guess what? Cover damage. Good job Poky.
  • Lockwood:

  • Only Asana to shoot again, so I pew pew and move a bit closer.
  • Turn 17__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • Even though I planned to dash to my drone last turn, Darkcrow with Su-Ren is close to me and he can heal me and weaken the Blackburn so I trust in my support and I stay to deal damage to Blackburn.
  • Rask:

  • Asana needs to cata out and the obvious cata is close to the Healing power-up so just double move to steal it and kill her next turn. But she is dead by the awesome Poky and his predicts.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I weaken and slow Blackburn with Spirit Bend and heal Arctic and me.
  • Lockwood:

  • Asana has to dash here, so I skip my turn, see where she goes, and then use my time machine to go back to this turn and shoot her in the face for the kill so that I look like a god. (but in all seriousness I figured she might want to go for the heal next turn, so a light’em’up might catch her cata. And it does.) Here is where I make the biggest mistake in the game though and fail to realize the game is ending soon. I move way too defensively/far away from the action here, making it impossible to pad my damage numbers to acceptable levels (500+) in the last couple turns.
  • Turn 18__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • It is turn 18, my team is winning 4-0 and at this point we just need to survive so I dash to my drone.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I was stuck in a bad place here, standing on the edge of a big one so I just use Turtle Tech, I also had one more tick of my 2nd wind so I opt to swing the stick towards Aurora.
  • Rask:

  • I feel alone so I just double move close to my enemies.
  • Lockwood:

  • Not really possible to lose at this point so I put Aurora on follow and sprint in crazily like I’m late to my own birthday party and everyone is already eating all the cake. I just HAVE TO get my ult off to boost those final damage numbers and try to end higher than Arctic at the very least!
  • Turn 19__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • At this point I have my ultimate again and I use it on Aurora and Zuki to keep them from following my team.
  • Su-Ren:

  • I actually think it was turn 20 here, so I swing my stick around and then move into the open.
  • Rask:

  • Nothing else to do besides running.
  • Lockwood:

  • I ult, but the enemy team is stingy and won’t let me boost my stats as much as I’d like and two of them dodge. How rude!
  • Turn 20__________________________________________________________________________
    Grey:

  • Last turn and I still have my Shift catalyst. Better use it to guarantee the win and avoid bad surprises.
  • Su-Ren:

  • This time I was certain it’s turn 20 so I dash into Zuki to avoid damage and steal the Healing Orb that spawned. I make sure to remind Kotto to ask Trion’s TheBlueMuzzy to give us our Tournament Champion titles.
  • Rask:

  • Last turn so I just dash to avoid damage and still I get hit haha.
  • Lockwood:

  • I pew aurora I guess for some final dmg #s. Yay shiny new title for a noob like me!
